Medicare rebates are available for clients receiving treatment from registered psychologists under the Australian Government’s Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative.
In order to receive Medicare rebates for psychological treatments, clients must first obtain a Mental Health Care Plan from a GP or psychiatrist. A Mental Health Care Plan will enable access to 10 Medicare rebated sessions with a psychologist per calendar year.
Alternatively, clients can elect to receive sessions without a Mental Health Care Plan.
Session fees can also be claimed under private health cover (depending on individual cover entitlements), or WorkCover or TAC if this is available for clients.
The cost for a 50-minute Psychological Consultation is $210.00. The Medicare rebate is $131.65, leaving a gap of $78.35.
